The Path to the Greener Pastures: Pastoralism, the backbone of the world's dry lands
On Monday 5 September from 18:30 to 20:00, a satellite event on Pastoralism will be organized by Vétérinaires Sans Frontières (VSF) International. Building on the long-lasting experience of the 11 members of the VSF International network with pastoral communities worldwide, a field study was conducted to analyze and better understand the root causes that impede an adequate development of pastoral regions and to provide appropriate technical answers and pathways for an enhanced political inclusion of pastoral communities.
Pastoralism is the best livelihood strategy in marginal areas and dry lands, providing important contributions to the economy, the ecosystems and the global cultural heritage. Yet, pastoral communities are often marginalized and usually not taken into account in the wider socio-political analysis.
Understanding the rationale, importance and dynamics of pastoralist livelihoods are key elements in the efforts to reduce poverty in pastoral communities and to unfold their potentialities to contribute to the wider societies.
